Translation certification


Why does a translation need to be certified?

A translation of certain documents, including references, certificates, official certifications and both immigration and emigration documents etc., needs to be certified in order to be recognised by public authorities and courts.


How is certification done?

Certification means officially authenticating the correctness of the translation's content and officially authenticating that it corresponds precisely to the information in the source text. For certification, it is absolutely essential that the appropriately empowered translator have available the original documents if the translation is to be certified. When doing this, the translator adds to the hardcopy of the translated text his or her officially recognised stamp, signature and creation date.

What is referred to as a supplementary certification is frequently demanded for recognition of a translation abroad. This means that a notary public certifies the sworn translator's signature on the translated text, and it is then provided by the responsible Regional Court with an authentication (pursuant to the Hague Legalisation Convention) with the wording as required for the relevant destination country.


Why do we not offer this?

The decision as to whether a translator applies to be able to certify translations is a voluntary one and is a personal matter for the relevant translator. Not every translator decides to do this.
Like all those who work for us, translators who are able to certify translations work at various locations both at home and abroad. This would mean that a client would have to anticipate substantial additional costs that would be disproportionate to the costs of pure translation. In addition, it would be necessary to charge certification fees and, in the case of a supplementary authentication, additional notary's and court fees. Likewise, the longer time needed by the person in question owing to waiting times in public offices would have to be charged.
